Abstract

Sustain mechanism of large longitudinal vortical structure in turbulent Couette flow was investigated experimentally by studying the turbulent diffusion term in the mean vorticity transport equation. The basic streamwise vortex is installed into the flow by a vortex generator (pairs of delta wing) mounted on the stationary wall. Turbulent Poiseuille flow, where the streamwise vortex can not be sustained, was also studied as well as the Couette flow to compare the results. It is shown that the transport of streamwise fluctuating vorticity w'1 through its interaction with spanwise fluctuating velocity u'3, u'3w'1, plays a dominant role on the sustain of the streamwise vortical structure in turbulent Couette flow.
