Suspended‐matter sampling and current observations in the vicinity of Hunters Point, San Francisco Bay

Abstract

In connection with hydraulic model studies of proposed structures at Hunters Point in San Francisco Bay, extensive observations were made on suspended‐matter concentration, current velocity and direction, and bottom material composition. Because this information may be of value in connection with future investigations on harbor installations, sewage disposal plants, and other works, the data are summarized as a matter of record.The various observations were taken over approximately a 92‐hour period on April 14–18, 1945. As mentioned above, these observations included suspended matter and bottom sampling; current velocities and directions, as well as a continuous record of the stage of tide, by a tide machine, at Point Avisadero (see Fig. 1). Shown on Figure 1 are the locations of the nine stations at which continuous observations were taken. Eight of the stations were anchored boats, and one was on shore at Point Avisadero. The boats were provided and operated by the United States Coast Guard Reserve. Observations aboard boats were made by personnel provided by the United States Navy, Twelfth Naval District. Equipment and supervision for the current observations were provided by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey.
