Abstract

There is little published information about the anti- bacterial activity of tea tree oil, although the oil is subject to an Australian Standard (AS 2782-1985) and is widely avail- able both in Australia and overseas. The Australian Stan- dard sets compositional limits for only two of the components of tea tree oil, terpinen-4-01, reputedly the antibacterial component, and 1,8-cineole, a putative skin irritant (Carson and Riley 1993).
