Abstract

It has been found that standard additive packages that are effective in base stocks from medium-sulfur crudes are often ineffective in oils from a number of other crudes. In order to determine the additive susceptibility of these oils, the detergent properties of detergent-dispersant additives of various types in lube base stocks were investigated. Three types of additives were studied: a sulfonate, an alkylsalicylate, and a sulfurized alkylphenolate. Results show that oils from medium-sulfur crudes are susceptibles to all these additives. For highly treated oils, low concentrations of the additives can be used. Oils from low-sulfur crudes are more selective in additive response and sulfonate type additives are recommended.
