Abstract
Orienting new nurses to the emergency department is expensive, time-consuming, and stressful. It is stressful for both the new nurse and the preceptor or educator tasked with guiding the new nurse through this transformation. Many orientation programs incorporate Patricia Benner's theory “from novice to expert.” According to this theory, the newly orienting nurse would be classified as an advanced beginner.1 One of the key challenges advanced beginners face is a lack of nursing instinct that can only come from experience.
