Abstract

Recent studies (1, 2) have shown that exogenous exposure plays, at most, only a very minor role in the development of acute attacks of fungous disease of the feet. It appears that local resistance is the most important factor in determining whether or not clinical fungous disease occurs. Many, perhaps the majority of, persons living in parts of the world where fungous infections are prevalent carry fungi on their feet at least some of the time, without having fungous disease.
