Abstract

Neocarzinostatin is a polypeptide anti-tumour substance produced by Streptomyces carzinostatics. Neocarzinostatin has demonstrated a strong anti-tumour activity towards several experimental tumours and has also been tried clinically. However, there are no experimental data for the effect on squamous carcinomas. Therefore, we studied the effect of neocarzinostatin on a murine squamous carcinoma. The survival curve was a two component curve and D 0 values were 1·1 mg/kg in the first part and 8·5 mg/kg in the second part. On the other hand, neocarzinostatin was quite toxic for the WHT/Ht mice used in the experiment; e.g. LD 50 (30) was 2·4 ± 0·9 mg/kg. This dose level corresponds to the dose required to obtain a surviving fraction of 0·1 of tumour cells treated with the drug.
