Abstract

The survival of bovine leukosis virus (BLV) in bovine blood and blood products stored at 4°C was investigated. BLV in cells survived in blood containing anticoagulant and BLV antibodies for at least two weeks; BLV was also detected at this time in the plasma of the stored blood. BLV in cells survived in serum that was free of BLV antibodies for at least four weeks and BLV was also found after four weeks of storage in the supernatant following centrifugation of the blood mixture. BLV was not demonstrated in the serum and plasma of 12 BLV infected cattle.
