Abstract
Thermal barrier ceramic oxide coatings are gaining wide acceptance for applications in heat engines. Such ceramic thermal shields are used in conjunction with MCrAlY-type intermediate bond coatings, applied over superalloy substrates. The thermal barrier coatings must endure extreme thermal cycling and hostile chemical environments. A discussion is presented on the various important features which need to be addressed in the design of viable thermal barrier coating systems.
