Abstract

A sample survey of existing x-ray centers was carried out to ascertain the level of radiation protection facilities and radiation monitoring in 28 X-ray centers located in hospitals and clinics in Anambra and Enugu states. Only 2 (7.14%) of these were monitored by the Federal Radiation Protection Services. 2(2.14%) had a warning sign for the public. Fifteen percent had their diagnostic rooms, ray proofed. Only 3(4.5%) members of staff had attended any radiation protection courses. Lead aprons were readily available in all the centers. Thermoluminent Dosimetres were available only at the teaching hospitals. It is concluded therefore, that the levels of radiation protection facilities in these centers are below expectation. Radiation Monitoring is almost non-existent Key Words: Radiation protection, facility, Radiation monitoring Journal of Biomedical Investigation 2004;2(1): 17-21
