Survey of Neonatal and Infant Disease in Macaca nemestrina

Abstract

Expanding use of nonhuman primates as animal models for human disease requires a more thorough understanding of the natural disease spectrum of each species used in research. Anver et al. (1973) described the major pathological findings in neonates of nine species at the New England Regional Primate Research Center. The present report describes the major pathological findings in 63 pigtail macaque (Macaca nemestrina) perinates, neonates and infants at the Infant Primate Research Laboratory of the Child Development and Mental Retardation Center and the Regional Primate Research Center at the University of Washington between 1973 and 1977. The animals were between 1 day and 1 year old at death.
