Abstract

Summary A large variety of electronic power converter circuits are available for use in a growing number of applications. For high-power equipment, semiconductor thyristor and diode devices are most often used. The circuits are conveniently classified according to whether the thyristors are turned off by natural or forced commutation. Naturally commutated converters include ac voltage controllers using phase control or integral cycle switching, ac/dc converters of many types, and cycloconverters. In the category of forced- commutated converters are dc/dc choppers, dc/ac inverters of several major classes, and direct ac/ac frequency changers. In many applications, two or more converters are cascaded to form a linked system. Examples of each type of converter and their applications are presented.
