Survey of computer methods for fitting curves to discrete data or approximating continuous functions

Abstract

In preparation for this survey I prepared a classified bibliography of recent publications (Bibliography of Recent Publications in Approximation Theory with Emphasis on Computer Applications, to appear in Computer Reviews, ~, November 1968). In an effort to obtain a truly current impression of activity in approximation theory, letters were written in July to about 120 persons who are active in approximation theory and applications. Approximately 35 responded with valuable references and comments. I wish to express my sincere appreciation to these respondents particularly in view of the very short notice. I supplemented these references by scanning various journals published since January of this year. Even with a heavy bias toward only very recent work the bibliography finally included 394 titles.
