Abstract

AbstractAs building information modeling (BIM) has become more widely adopted by the architecture, engineering, construction and operations (AECO) industry, its undeveloped potential for supporting facility management (FM) has become more apparent. In order to fully release the power of BIM tools, the first step is to understand and clarify what the requirements of the facility management phase are for operations and maintenance activities. This paper proposes a process for knowledge accumulation and sharing for BIM-FM through the project life cycle. In order to collect the initial knowledge for the knowledge database, a survey questionnaire was developed and administered to collect perspectives from industry practitioners to understand existing facility management requirements and the types of maintainability problems that frequently occur that have the potential to be solved early on in the design phase. The survey results indicated that maintainability issues should be taken into consideration during t...
