Abstract

After a two-year peace process (1990–1992) that was handled primarily by the Italian Catholic lay group the Comunità di Sant’ Egidio, the civil war in Mozambique ended. On October 4, 1992, the government of Mozambique (the Mozambique Liberation Front [Frelimo])—led by Joaquim Chissano— and the insurgent force, Renamo—led by Afonso Dhlakama—signed the General Peace Agreement. The agreement was to culminate in the holding of elections in 1994 and its implementation was managed by the United Nations Operation in Mozambique (ONUMOZ).
