Abstract

This text formed the basis of a speech delivered at the British Society of Criminology Conference, Keele University, July 2002. Since that time, every police force in England and Wales has adopted Police Community Support Officers (CSOs). The Met had nearly 2,500 CSOs at the end of March 2006, with a predicted expansion to 3,500 in March 2007. Their introduction underpins the largest expansion of community policing in the modern history of UK policing, the Met’s ‘Safer Neighbourhood’ programme.
