Abstract

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis is a benign disease with chronic granulomatous inflammation. Since it was first described, an ideal treatment approach has not yet been established because of heterogeneous clinical presentation with unclarified etiopathogenesis. Today, it is possible to examine the treatment approaches used in IGM under three main headings. These are conservative treatment approaches, surgical interventions, and combined treatment approaches. In the treatment of IGM, surgical approaches are used more limitedly than in the past. However, surgery may still be considered especially in patients with large lesions who are unresponsive to corticosteroids and other immunosuppressive drugs or in patients with frequent recurrences. Despite its rapid success, surgical interventions also have some disadvantages like problematic wound healing, possible aesthetic complications, and unhindered risk of recurrence.
