Abstract

In reviewing the experience with eighty-four patients who had ulcerative colitis and who were treated by ileostomy and colectomy, it is apparent that this operative procedure is fraught with many complications and a significant mortality and morbidity. These unfavorable aspects can be minimized by careful attention to detail and meticulous adherence to the surgical principles that have been established during the acquisition of this experience. In spite of these complications, the end result is an excellent one with regard to rehabilitation. Ileostomy and colectomy can restore a near normal life to the patient with ulcerative colitis; whatever handicaps may exist are gratefully accepted by the patient as a most desirable exchange for the emotional and physical misery and disability which often follow the prolonged conservative, nonoperative approach.
