Abstract
The modern operation for ulcerative colitis, panproctocolectomy with construction of the ileal stoma by the Brooke method, is eminently satisfactory and produces healthy, happy patients without physical limitations. Nonetheless it is a formidable procedure and should not be undertaken lightly. Excision of the colon in two or more stages leads to excessively high mortality and morbidity. Generally, membership in an “ileostomy club” is no longer recommended. A psychic origin of ulcerative colitis is far from proved.
