Abstract

1. The results of tympanoplasty are not as satisfactory as one would gather from perusal of the journals. 2. Failures are the result of insufficient thoroughness in exenteration of infection, and defective plastic methods. 3. Recent trends in technique are tabulated: (1) Myringoplasty. This should entail cortical mastoidectomy and the use of free fascial graft and free skin graft derived from the anterior meatal wall. The mastoid cavity is obliterated with a muscle graft. (2) Type 2 tympanoplasty is no longer performed. (3) Type 3 tympanoplasty requires modified radical mastoidectomy, the cavity being obliterated with muscle graft, and free fascia and meatal skin being Used in construction of the cavum major. Recently, the Ibanez operation has been performed in place of the classical operation. (4) Type 4 tympanoplasty is abandoned in favour of the Ibanez operation. (5) Type 5 tympanoplasty has been abandoned.
