Abstract

Eagle syndrome is a rare condition that can be associated with trauma and previous surgeries in the styloid process region and genetic and systemic conditions. The diagnosis is based on findings of clinical and imaging exams. The treatment can vary from pharmacologic or surgical depending on the patient and surgeon. In the present case, a 43-year-old female patient reported mandibular pain during mouth opening and chewing associated with throat pain for 3 years. Clinically, the patient presented no pain during cervical mobilization and had a rigid structure in the peritonsillar region and oral floor, bilaterally, with more severe pain on the right side. Resection of the elongated styloid process was performed through an intraoral approach. The patient had complete resolution of the condition, without lesions of the lingual and hypoglossal nerves. The choice for surgical treatment through intraoral access is a safe, fast approach and presents good aesthetic results to treat patients with Eagle syndrome.
