Abstract

Surgery for angina pectoris has been carried out in the Department of Thoracic Surgery in Malmo since 1959. Mainly two different surgical methods have been used: a modified Beck method and a diaphragm graft method which have been devised in our laboratory for experimental surgery. In order to record the re-vascularizing effects as objectively as possible, the two methods used in the present investigation are compared pre-opera:ively and 1 year postoperatively according to a special examination programme. The patient material has been evaluated by the thoracic surgeons according to the New York Heart Association's functional classification as well as by our own classification. The former system shows in the series operated on with the graft method a certain but not significant improvement while our own classification demonstrates a significant improvement.
