Abstract

Objective To evaluate the efficacy of surgical treatment by posterior approach with pedical-Eggshell osteotomy on the correction of kyphosis deformity in the old thoracolumber fracture. Methods The clinical data of 24 patients with thoracic or lumber fracture who underwent the posterior approach surgical treatment with pedical-Eggshell osteotomy from September 2007 to March 2011 were retospectively analyzed. All patients had waist and back pain with different degrees, the preoperative VAS was from 4.7 to 7.6,the mean was 5.5.The neurological deficit was evaluated by the Frankel classification:1 case was B,3 cases were C,7 cases were D,13 cases were E.The preoperative Cobb angle was from 22° to 47°,the mean was 32.7°.The apex vertebra was the fracture vertebra. Results All cases were followed-up,the average period was 14.3 months(range 6 to 36 months),the clinical symptoms of all the patients after operation were released. The mean postoperative VAS was decreased from 5.5 to 2.2.The mean postoperative Cobb angle was 7.7° with an average correction of 25°.Bone fusion was obtained in all cases and neurological status were improved. Conclusions The posterior approach surgical treatment with pedical-Eggshell osteotomy is an effective surgical procedure for the correction of kyphosis deformity in the mild and moderate old thoracolumber fracture.
