Abstract

Due to improved diagnostic techniques, most breast surgery is performed for the treatment of breast cancer after a preoperative diagnosis has been made. In the management of breast cancer, there has been a trend towards breast conservation, but some patients require or request a mastectomy. Axillary surgery remains controversial and the new technique of sentinel node biopsy (which aims to increase the accuracy and decrease the morbidity associated with axillary surgery) is currently being evaluated in the UK. Breast reconstruction has also improved with development of new implants and techniques using pedicled and free myocutaneous flaps. Many breast surgeons have developed these skills so that they can provide a comprehensive service to breast cancer patients.
