Abstract
Rupture may occur in up to 30% of silicone breast implants, with the rate varying by implant age and type [1]. When ruptured implants are surgically removed, removal of any extravasated silicone is also attempted. Free silicone remaining in the breast may cause discomfort on be detected as a palpable mass. Because silicone is clean, it may not be readily visible at surgery. Moreover, when silicone infiltrates the surrounding breast, muscle, on lymphatic tissue, it may not be seen as a distinct mass at the time of implant removal. Sonognaphy can detect and localize areas of free silicone that have extnavasated from ruptured implants [2-5]. We present our experience with the use of intraoperative sonography for the localization of free silicone for surgical removal or biopsy.
