Abstract

The rsk of hemorrhagic complications for patients undergoing anticoagulated dermatologic operation is a controversial issue. Among 5 recent studies,1-5 4 of which were controlled, no increased risk of perioperative bleeding complications was found with the continued administration of anticoagulants and platelet inhibitors in patients who underwent cutaneous operation procedures. These studies concluded that the preoperative discontinuation of blood thinners is not necessary. Potential disadvantages of discontinuing blood thinners before operation include an increased risk of thromboembolic complications,6-9 and additional inconvenience and cost for the patient, who must often have laboratory tests monitored and coordinate extra visits with the primary care physician or cardiologist.
