Summary

Introduction

Chronic dialysis is considered a risk factor for atherosclerosis [1]. For those on hemodialysis (HD), the relative risk of stroke and cerebral infarction is 5.2 and 2.0, respectively [2]. Several authors have reported a higher incidence of carotid artery plaque in patients on HD [3,4]. According to a report by Pascazio, et al 74% of HD patients have evidence of carotid plaque [4]. Carotid endarterectomy is an established surgical treatment for patients with severe carotid artery stenosis, but there are only a few reports dealing with the procedure in hemodialysis patients. We report the results of carotid endarterectomy in those on hemodialysis in our hospital
