Abstract

The American College of Surgeons' Clinical Congress on Sept 30–Oct 4 in Chicago, marks the beginning of the College's centenary celebrations. Presentations are planned on the College's history and the theme “stewardship of our profession”. Such a milestone should provide an opportunity to look forward and to consider not only what the College wishes to preserve, but also the directions in which it might change. In doing so, fellows might wish to consider the words of the great American surgeon and College president, William Mayo: “I look through a half opened door into the future, full of interest, intriguing beyond my power to describe, but with a full understanding that it is for each generation to solve its own problems”.
