Severe newborn infants admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs), especially those with gastrointestinal (GI) complications, are even more susceptible to environmental influences, which can lead to disorders of the intestinal microbiota and possible proliferation of pathogenic bacteria.
