Abstract

Objective To analyze the efficacy of surgery in eyes with non-clearing vitreous hemorrhage (NCVH) caused by branch retinal vein occlusion,(BRVO) in type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM).Methods Two hundred and eighty-nine eyes of 228 consecutive T2DM patients with NCVH underwent primary standard three-port PPV were included. In 17 eyes of 16 patients,NCVH was caused by BRVO.The clinical data about these patients were collected preoperatively, intraoperatively and 9 months postoperatively for statistical analysis. Results The incidence of BRVO in eyes with NCVH in type 2 diabetes was 5.9%,and only 24% happened in superior temporal vein.Visual acuity was improved in all eyes 9 months after vitrectomy. The prognosis of vision was worse in the eyes with superior temporal vein and in which operations done 6 months after vitreous hemorrhage. The incidence of BRVO accompanied with tractional retinal detachment was high in eyes with time internal between vitrectomy and vitreous hemorrhage more than 6 months. Conclusion Visual outcome at 9 months after vitrectomy is poor in eyes with superior temporal vein occlusion and operation time more than 6 months after NCVH.
