Abstract

Not so long ago after the stuttering and rather uncertain beginnings of the subspecialty of surgical gastroenterology in this country, we, one a recent and the other a less recent entrant into the field, thought it might be an opportune time to examine how and why it has become so popular among young surgeons and where it is now. In this article we will trace its history, i.e. why and how it was started, describe its consolidation, discuss the present situation and its problems and try and suggest what should be done in the future.
