Abstract

The early diagnosis of various disorders causing neonatal respiratory distress and requiring some form of immediate surgical intervention is stressed.Because of the relatively low incidence of these surgical disorders a review of the various lesions observed in a large referral center is presented. These lesions compromise the neonate’s respiratory capacity by intrinsic discontinuity or extrinsic compression of either the extrathoracic or intrathoracic major airways; alternatively, there may be sufficient compression of the remaining normal lung parenchyma to preclude adequate gas exchange.Generally, the diagnosis is readily made roentgenologically, provided appropriate examinations have been carried out.Representative roentgenographic examples are shown in conjunction with brief background descriptions of the various surgical lesions causing respiratory distress in the newborn.
