Abstract

In this text Dr. Schwartz presents an excellent summary of current knowledge about the normal and pathological function of the liver under circumstances that are of interest to the general surgeon. The division of the book is along conventional lines. The bibliography is extensive and the graphic material excellently handled. The chapter devoted to pre- and postoperative preparation of the patient is a compendium of advocated therapy under a variety of circumstances without extensive critical comment. Perhaps the most interesting part of the text is the chapter which deals with the multitude of special diagnostic studies which can be made on the liver. The most important recent developments have emerged as a result of the angiographic and blood pressure and flow determination techniques applied to the splanchnic circulatory system with particular reference to the liver.
