Abstract

Sensorineural hearing loss, especially of high frequencies, can be an important sequela of both acute and chronic otitis media. Recent studies of this phenomenon by various associates of our laboratory and clinic are briefly reviewed. Two illustrative case studies are presented. The first, involving acute purulent otitis media, showed both temporary threshold shift (TTS) and permanent threshold shift (PTS). The second case was a teenager with intractable chronic otitis media and mastoiditis and severe labyrinthine symptoms that were ameliorated with a flexible surgical approach. Surgical tips used to deal with this problem are presented.
