Abstract

Foramen ovale is an essential interatrial channel during foetal life allowing oxygenated placental blood to reach the developing embryo. Incomplete postnatal fusion leads to patent foramen ovale (PFO). It is present in approximately 25% of the adult population and increases the risk of cryptogenic strokes. About 40% of the cryptogenic strokes have a PFO.
