Abstract

Although surgery plays a very important role in the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in children, in most cases it is indicated only after medical therapy with corticosteroids and other antiinflammatory drugs, immune modulators, biologics, antibiotics, gut rest, and nutritional support have failed to adequately control the disease or have caused unacceptable side effects or complications.
