Abstract

ANYTIME ALL 100 US senators can agree on something, it's news. The problem that's brought them to unanimous agreement: the public health menace of drunken driving. This week, Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, MD—who has been pondering the problem for some time—was expected to assign staff to develop a plan through which he and his successors can work with the states and other agencies to cope with the drunken driving menace. Koop has in hand a letter from senators, who call the situation a "national crisis." The one-page letter summarizes some statistics relating to alcohol-related road accidents: Two of five Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related accident at some point in their lives.
