Abstract

To reduce the risk of the damage due to lightning for the electrical and electronic systems within a structure, the lightning protection system has to be properly designed. This paper illustrates the influence of the main factors and parameters which affect the selection, installation and coordination of surge protective device (SPD) in protecting against surge on the low-voltage power line. The two types of SPD are manufactured according to the most typical technology are considered, namely Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) and Triggered Spark Gap (TSG). From there, the basic recommendations are given in the effective selection SPD in protecting against surge on the low-voltage power line. Depending on the characteristics of the object to be protected, it should select the type of reasonable protection.
