Abstract
Summary The present work is the first step of a geomorphological mapping of the surface of Qatar. In this work a regional map of the surficial deposits at a scale of 1:200 000 was prepared on the basis of Landsat imagery of aerial photographs and topographic maps. The Qatar Peninsula has been exposed since the Miocene and consequently a variety of erosional and depositional landforms have been formed. Features of depositional origin (surficial deposits) can be classified into seven main groups according to their occurrence and textural properties, namely hamadas, sand accumulations, saline flats, coastal sediments, depression sediments, fluvial sediments and duricrusts. The deposits may be of a local or exogenous origin.
