Abstract

The surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of hydrocinnamonitrile in silver sol has been investigated. The molecule is adsorbed onto the silver surface via the π system of tis CN group. As an ethane derivative, the trans conformation appears to be dominant on the surface when Cl − is present in the silver sol solution. On the other hand, the gauche conformation seems dominant when BH − 4 is present in the sol solution. The conformation of the adsorbed species appears to depend more or less on the sol surface potential. Most importantly, a vibrational mode assignment is made for the molecule in the liquid state.
