Abstract

Characteristics of surface wave modes on a planar slab with either negative permittivity or negative permeability are studied. It is shown that the slab is a monomode structure and supports a TM mode when the permittivity is negative and TE mode when the permeability is negative. It is shown that a tightly guided surface wave mode can exist on a slab with vanishingly small thickness. This should have applications in miniaturizing microwave components.
