Abstract

Calculations based on previously derived expressions of the surface tension are presented for the interface between the two solid phases occurring in the hard square lattice gas. (The phases are identical except for occupying different sublattices.) It is found that the formula d(σ/kT)/d(lnz)=ρ (where σ, z, and ρ are the surface tension, activity, and bulk density) is consistent with the numerical work. An expression for the boundary tension of a free surface is derived, and application is made also to the hard square lattice gas. This boundary tension is found to be negative and small in magnitude—with maximum magnitude slightly below the transition activity.
