Abstract

The surface tension anisotropy of pivalic acid crystals in ethanol solution is measured to test theories of steady state dendritic crystal growth. The result, ϵ 4 = 0.006 ± 0.002, is considerably smaller than previously believed, and too small to allow a convincing test of microscopic solvability. The growth rate is now found to be consistent both with microscopic solvability and marginal stability.
