Abstract

Surface temperature-driven erosion instability of plasma-facing material is analytically investigated. It is shown that for shallow incidence the influence of temperature disturbance consists primarily of growth rate enhancement for the fluctuations with small wave numbers. For larger incidence angles surface temperature-related effects dominate over ion flux-driven deposition instability. Mean scale of surface roughening is estimated to be 1–2 mm.
