Abstract

Atomic resolution STM images of (100) cleavage planes of semiconducting RuS 2 are presented. Both sulphur and ruthenium atoms can be identified on the surface. The observed surface periodicities were confirmed by LEED measurements and agree well with bulk lattice parameters. The surface appears to be essentially unreconstructed. Because of a remarkable stability under ambient conditions RuS 2 is discussed as a model system for STM investigations of photoelectrocatalytic reactions.
