Abstract

A density functional approach is used to describe the 3He bound state on the free surface of 4He. The method yields a binding energy ε = −5.4 K and an effective mass m* = 1.3 m in reasonably good agreement with experiments (ε = −5.0 K, m* = 1.45 m). The role of the 4He surface width in determining the 3He energy is discussed.
