Abstract

Automatic feature recognition (AFR) plays an important role in process planning. One of the problems in recognizing cylindrical surfaces via volume decomposition is the problem in generating a uniform thickness for volume decomposition. With the combination of offsetting original surfaces and a mirror approach, the symmetrical cylinder volume decomposition can be generated uniformly. Sub delta volumes for finishing (SDVF) bodies were generated in half section before they being mirrored for full-section SDVF. With full-section SDVF generated, sub delta volume for finishing filled region (SDVF-FR) and sub delta volume for roughing (SDVR) were then generated. Volumes of these bodies were then compared with manual overall delta volume (ODVmanual) calculation. Results show that significant volumes were generated and the developed algorithm is adequate for recognizing symmetrical cylinder part models.
