Abstract The surface oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfate ions by nitrogen dioxide on hydrated silica gel has been followed by observing the photoelectron spectrum of the S(2p) electron. The reaction, carried out at 25°C, results in extensive surface coverage of sulfate ions over a period of several hours.
