Abstract
Abstract Surface chemistry has progressed to a stage where definitive characterization of some simple prototype surface reaction systems is possible. For example, one can predict or reproduce measurements of the rate of CO oxidation on Pt in any laboratory. probably to within a factor of two over wide ranges of temperature and pressure. On the other hand, one would be fortunate to guess the rate of this reaction on Pt in the automotive converter to within a factor of ten unless the method of preparation and previous history of the catalyst had been precisely specified.
