Abstract
The preparation of high-quality surfaces of high-Tc superconductors for magneto-optic (MO) imaging is discussed in detail. Especially on bulk and granular high-Tc superconductors, the surface polishing is essential to obtain clear and sharp MO images, yielding the highest magnetic resolution. The most important aspect of the surface preparation is that the superconducting properties of the samples are fully conserved, which is not of importance for a regular microstructural investigation. Here, we present several polishing techniques, and explain the basic requirements in order to achieve well prepared sample surfaces of the otherwise quite brittle, ceramic high-Tc superconductors.
